Al-Shabab Attacks Parliament in Mogadishu

A car bomb exploded midday local time outside parliament gates followed by gun shots and more blasts.

 

The militia attacked the front of the parliament building as security forces fired back.

 

"Fighting is going on inside the parliament building and we are fighting rebels inside the building but we evacuated members of parliament," Col Mahamed Dahir said.

 

MPs were evacuated out of the building, however there are reports that two MPs were wounded in the attack.

 

At least four police officers and several militants have been reported dead.

 

Somalia has experienced almost constant conflict since its government collapsed in 1991.

 

Al-Shabab is an al-Qaeda linked terrorist group, whose name means "The Youth" in Arabic, once controlled large areas of Somalia were pushed of major cities in 2011 and 2012.
