Alarm as anthrax outbreak reported in Nakuru

An Anthrax outbreak has been reported in Rongai, Nakuru West and Nakuru East sub-counties.

Following the outbreak, the  county department of agriculture livestock and fisheries  has enforced a quarantine in all the affected areas.

The county executive for agriculture Dr Stanley Chepkwony said that the outbreak was confirmed after samples from the affected areas tested positive for the deadly disease.

Dr Chepkwony further confirmed that officers have been sent to the affected areas.

He asserted that no meat would be allowed in and out of the affected areas as members of the pubic were warned to avoid contact with the affected animals and meat.

Free anthrax vaccination will begin on Wednesday in all the affected areas to arrest the spread of the disease.

Chepkwony said that free anti rabies vaccination will be given to dogs as well since some might have consumed meat from infected animals.

Over 100 buffaloes and two rhinos have also died from the disease at the Lake Nakuru National Park.

The county executive attributed the disease’s spread among wild animals at the park to an open sewer next to the park and domestic animals grazing at the park’s border.

He called on farmers to be cautious and to report any anthrax-like symptoms in their animals.

Such symptoms include high temperature, shivering or twitching, harsh dry coat, blood in dung or in nostrils, decrease or complete loss of milk and loss of appetite.
