Alcoblow escapee fined peanuts for killing varsity student

The court on Monday found a man guilty of causing death of a student by driving carelessly and under the influence.

Job Wangila Wandera, a quantity surveyor, was accused of causing an accident while trying to evade arrest by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in 2016.

The accused was fined Ksh.350,000, or a prison sentence of up to three years.

Wangila, who has been out on bond, was reported to have been escaping from a police alcohol blow test when he rammed into 21-year old Brian Kiambati, killing the then 3rd-year University of Nairobi Engineering student on the spot.

Speaking after the ruling, Brian’s father Wilson Kiambati said he was at peace that his son’s killer was found guilty, further adding that no amount of punishment meted against him would bring his son back to life.

The mother, on the other hand, expressed dissatisfaction at the court’s ruling.

Leon Kioko, Brian’s co-driver in the January 30 2016 incident, had in the same year told the Magistrate Court that they were joining the Thika Superhighway from Roysambu when he noticed bright lights on the wrong side of the road.

Witness testimony by then Citizen TV crew, Evelyn Wambui and Mathenge Goko who coincidentally, were on an assignment to cover a crack down on drunk driving famously known as alcoblow, indicated that the accused made a wrong U-turn to avoid landing on alcohol blow test when the accident occurred.
