Alert over expected strong winds at Kenyan Coast

The Meteorological department has warned that strong southerly winds are expected to hit the Kenyan coast from Sunday.

According to the weatherman, the winds may become even stronger on Monday with speeds of up to 25 m/s experienced during the whole day.

“The strong winds of 25 m/s and high waves of more than 3 meters are projected to continue to Tuesday July 23. The strong winds are likely to reduce to 20 m/s on  July 24. While the wave heights may reduce to 2 meters the same day,” Met said in a statement.

Areas on high alert are Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta.

Met warns that the strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages.

For those nearer the ocean, the winds are likely to lower visibility, cause boats to capsize and threaten the safety of those engaging in water sports and recreational activities.

Other areas that may experience the strong winds include Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir Isiolo, Meru, Embu, Garissa, and Kitui.

Residents of Makueni, Machakos, Southern Kajiado and Tana River have also been urged to be on the lookout.

“Continue listening to local media as updates will be provided if conditions change significantly. Further advisories will be issued as we follow upon the progress of this weather event,” Met adds.
