Standard one pupils in all the 23,000 public primary schools in Kenya will have received tablets under the government’s Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) by the end of this year.

According to the Principal Secretary for Livestock, Dr Andrew Tuimur, the DLP is a government’s flagship project which is part of the Vision 2030’s social pillar that is aimed at making Kenya a knowledge based economy.

He stated that the programme covers all the 23,000 pubic primary schools targeting over one million pupils countrywide, and that the devices shall have been installed by the end of this year.

Dr Tuimur, who revealed that the programme started with installation of the tablet devices in 150 selected schools in June this year, stated that the rest of the devices arrived in August 2016 and are currently being installed.

The PS made the remarks at Majiwa Primary School in Bondo sub-county during the launch of the DLP programme for Siaya County where he stated that each school will receive a number of tablets depending on the number of class one pupils.

Tuimur said that they are launching the digital programme with standard one content that has come with the devices, adding that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) will introduce other content that will be used by the students as they go along.

He further disclosed that children with special needs will also be catered for in the DLP programme, noting that all special schools in Kenya will also receive devices according to their needs.
