All set for first BBI report regional meeting in Kisii

Kisii County is set to host the first leaders consultative meeting to deliberate on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report on Friday, January 10.

The meeting, which will be graced by ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, will be attended by national leaders including several Governors, Senators, MPs, MCAs, elders, religious leaders, women and youth leaders and other professionals from across the Nyanza region.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the conference set to be held at the Kisii Sports Club grounds, Kisii Governor James Ongwae reaffirmed the regions support for the BBI report as he welcomed all leaders expected at the event.

“As leaders from the Lake Region Bloc we reaffirm our support for the report and we shall mobilize our citizenry to participate in enriching the report,” said Governor Ongwae.

He was speaking after chairing a meeting of colleague Governors from Nyanza to discuss Friday’s forum consultative meeting

“We are appealing to our people and stakeholders to read the report, understand its reccomendations for active and fruitful engagements during a multi-sectoral stakeholders’ forum slated for January 10, 2020 in Kisii,” he added.

All other Governors from the Lake Region Bloc — John Nyagarama (Nyamira), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), Okoth Obado (Migori), Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) and Cornel Rasanga (Siaya) are also in solidarity with the Building Bridges Initiative.

Other elected leaders from Kisii and the Nyanza region have also voiced their support for the BBI report.

Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri earlier said: “We believe a time has come when the nation is self-auditing and taking the message on national development from wananchi seriously. This is critical in enriching the nation’s well-being. We should stand firm in supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in this worthwhile initiative. The two leaders have shown us that we can live in harmony if we choose to.”

According to Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong’era, the BBI report is set to transform lives at the grassroots.

“The proposals in the BBI report can change our people’s lives, promote gender balance and will take care of the interests of many, including the youth and people living with disabilities. Once implemented, it will change lives, right up to the grassroots,” she says

The BBI report was unveiled on November 27, 2019 at the Bomas of Kenya where the public was advised to read and make their recommendations on the same.

On December 12, 2019 President Kenyatta extended the term for BBI taskforce for the next phase of the process which will largely involve expanding and guiding public participation, and structuring recommendations by Kenyans into implementable action plans.
