Allowances for NYS servicemen and women to be increased

The increased allowances for the National Youth Service (NYS) servicemen and women will be paid next week, Director General Dr. Richard Ndubai announced on Wednesday.

The NYS boss said the current government Supplementary Estimates includes the allowances, which were increased from Ksh.500 to Ksh.1, 500 and will cover due areas.

“No records of payment had been made because we did not have the money at the time. The money has now been included in the supplementary estimates and payment should happen next week,” said Dr. Ndubai.

The increment was as a result of a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta during the graduation of 13,725 servicemen and women in August last year at Gilgil NYS Training College.

President Kenyatta said youth from the NYS programme continue to play a critical role in building the country while revenue paid to the servicemen and women had not been reviewed to reflect the high cost of living.

“NYS continues to provide services in various development projects like dams, roads, relief supply and distilling of dams and my government will continue to support them,” he said.
