AMISOM, Somali forces retake key town from Al Shabaab

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops and the Somali National Army (SNA) have liberated and taken control of the town of Adan Yabaal in Middle Shabelle region after a major offensive against the terrorist group Al Shabaab.

The joint forces confronted the militants at Moqokori and Mahaas in Hiiraan region, where they have been operating from lately, before driving them out of Adan Yabaal, according to a statement from AMISOM.

The UN troops claimed that Al Shabaab militants vandalized amenities, burnt foodstuffs and destroyed a generator used to pump water from the only functioning borehole in the town.

“AMISOM and SNA are currently working with the Federal Government of Somalia to restore water and other essential services at Adan Yabaal. They are also conducting patrols and clearing the area of booby traps and IEDs planted by Al Shabaab,” stated AMISOM.

The incident comes a week after six militant commanders, among them a Kenyan were killed by AMISOM and Somalia National Army in different attacks in Somalia

AMISOM said the deaths brought to seven the number of Al Shabaab commanders killed by the allied forces in one week.
