AMREF Supports Training Of Midwives In Kenya

The African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF) in partnership with Chase Bank Foundation and other corporate sponsors will sponsor a walk on March 22nd in support of the training of midwives in Kenya.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Norfolk hotel on Sunday, AMREF head of programmes Mette Kinoti urged the government to support the training of midwives.

Kinoti said this is a means of lowering maternal deaths in line with the Millennium Development Goals on maternal mortality set to be realized by 2015.

Kenya has about 30,000 trained midwives but only 15,000 are in active duty.

According to AMREF, 1 trained midwife can assist in the safe delivery of about 100 babies annually.

Midwives play a crucial role in childbirth especially in rural areas, where their services are most needed.
