ANC Party rebels walk free as Mudavadi softens stand

Three legislators in the Musalia Mudavadi-led Amani National Congress Party are walking free after the party changed its position on taking disciplinary action against them.

On Tuesday morning, the ANC National Executive Council developed cold feet and failed to constitute a disciplinary committee to question Senators George Khaniri (Vihiga), Cleophas Malala (Kakamega) and Nominated MP George Otsotsi.

Sources within ANC revealed that the party was careful with the backlash it would receive should it dewhip the three who have been questioning why Mudavadi missed the swearing in of Raila Odinga.

Addressing the press on Tuesday afternoon, Mudavadi issued a warning to the rebel MPs, saying the party would not tolerate any indiscipline from the members.

Mudavadi insisted that going forward, ANC would be guided by rules, to allow for a smooth relationship with other NASA affiliates; ODM and Wiper.

It has also emerged that the meeting in Kwisero on Sunday, February 18 hosted by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli advised the party to reach out to the three and avoid internal wrangles that would affect Mudavadi’s bid for presidency in 2022.

The party is also said to have had a view that it should not go against a court proceeding at the political parties tribunal which barred the party from instituting disciplinary action against the rebel MPs.

Last week on Thursday, ANC Party officials accused the three rebel legislators of working with the Jubilee Party to sabotage Mudavadi’s 2022 presidential ambitions.

“The party will exercise options at its disposal in dealing with this matter. You cannot enjoy the benefits of being a member of our party while also working to destroy it. You had better go out there where you rightly belong,” warned ANC parliamentary group Chair Ayub Savula.
