Another doctors’ strike looms as Nakuru medics ‘down tools’

Doctors in Nakuru County on Friday, May 5 began a go slow over five months’ unpaid salary.

Speaking to the media at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital on Friday, the doctors led by the South Rift Secretary of the KMPDU, Dr Davji Atellah, said that despite a directive by the President to the Council of Governors to pay doctors for the duration they were on strike, they are yet to receive the payment.

While expressing concern that most doctors are unable to pay rent and fuel their vehicles to work, Atellah further added that the doctors are also demanding allowances arrears for the same period.

The officials said that the go slow will extend to Kajiado, Bomet, Laikipia and Narok from tomorrow (Saturday, May 6).

The officials were keen to note that the Return-to-Work-Formula signed when the strike was called off included non-victimization, further observing that in Bomet County, doctors have been victimized.

This comes just two days after, the County Government of Nakuru, in an internal memo to all staff, said that the April salaries would be delayed.

According to the memo, the delay was attributed to difficulties in accessing funds from the national government.

The county government, therefore, urged them to be patient as efforts to sort out the salaries by the end of this week are made.
