Another party says no to Jubilee merger

It is not yet party time for the Jubilee Party after he Democratic Party (DP) announced that it will not dissolve as announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta Tuesday, August 9 at State House, Nairobi.

DP officials told Radio Citizen that they have decided to go it alone in 2017 and in other subsequent general elections.

The party’s national chairman, Esau Kioni, said on Wednesday that the party is focusing on 2017 General Election for now adding that the party is planning to field candidates in all positions with the exception of the presidency.

“Our candidate is President Uhuru Kenyatta, that was resolved by the governing council some few months ago. So the question of merging parties is out of table,” he stated.

However, the party said it is ready to work with like-minded parties or coalitions in order to have a pre or post coalition agreement.

DP was founded by retired President Mwai Kibaki on December 25, 1991. He used the party to contest for presidency in 1992 and 1997 general elections.

The party was a partner of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) that Kibaki used in 2002 General Election to clinch the presidency. He won the elections by over 60%.

“DP is not a special purpose vehicle; it will be used by many generations.”

Kioni said they are ready to engage in structural discussion with President Uhuru Kenyatta on the future of the party.
