Another scandal? Health ministry sued over multibillion CT scanners tender

The Ministry of Health has been sued for tendering afresh 37 CT scanners.

It is alleged that the scanners had already been budgeted for in the acquisition of Medical Equipment Services (MES) at a cost of Ksh.4.5billion.

In the application, Nairobi lawyer Anthony Otiende claims that Ministry of Health issued a fresh tender for the procurement of the scanners despite the existing allocation in the budget.

He further claims that the cost of the machines has been inflated four times.

Otiende accuses the ministry of purchasing each at a cost of Ksh.227million yet the current market value for such equipment is reportedly Ksh.40-45 million per machine.

Otiende also notes that the country stands to lose billions arising from the alleged double tendering scandal.

According to him, the Health Ministry has deliberately and contemptuously violated the law which provides that procurement of public goods and services must be in accordance with a system that is fair, equitable and transparent.
