Anti-graft body recommends prosecution of five governors

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recommended prosecution of five governors over corruption related charges.

Speaking at a Mombasa hotel during a workshop on investigation on corruption at county level in the country on Tuesday, November 15, EACC Chief Executive Officer, Halakhe Waqo, however, did not disclose the names of the county bosses to be prosecuted saying they will be arraigned soon to answer charges of alleged massive looting of funds in their counties.

Waqo further intimated that security officials are almost completing investigations before recommending the prosecution of five governors.

While confirming that political interference in procurement department is among issues that have hindered quality services at county level, the EACC boss announced that the Commission will launch a fresh postmortem of corruption cases in all the 47 counties.

Waqo further indicated that the commission is also investigating all the 47 counties saying some of the staff are unqualified and may have fake or forged academic papers.

He also accused a section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) for failing to play their oversight role, a matter he says has led to rampant cases of corruptions especially at the Procurement and Finance departments where he says millions of shillings have been looted.

On her part, EACC Vice Chair, Sophia Lepuchirit, said majority of county officers engaging in looting of public funds are now investing in properties in Nairobi County and urged his team to be vigilant and investigate the matter.
