Anti-riot police foil plan to disrupt Embrace Kenya rally in Garissa

A contingent of anti-riot police squad had to step in to thwart an attempt to disrupt an ‘Embrace Kenya’ meeting in Garissa Town.

The group, that fashions itself as defenders of the March 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga had called for a stop to the high voltage politics.

No sooner had they landed than a section of youths attempted to disrupt the meeting that had been convened at Garissa Township grounds.

From the onset, intelligence reports had indicated there were plans to scuttle the meeting due to local politics pitting Governor Ali Korane and National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, who is also the local MP.

Police officers were forced to intervene and disperse the rowdy youths to restore normalcy.

The Embrace Kenya team insisted that the Kenyatta-Odinga handshake was an anti-dote to political anxiety that rocked the country after the contested 2017 presidential election.

Homa Bay Woman Rep Gladys Wanga said: “Tumetoka uchaguzi juzi, tunataka kwanza tufanye kazi, wananchi wapate manufaa ya kazi, ndiyo tuendelee na mambo ya uchaguzi ikifika 2022.”

On her part, Nyeri Woman Rep Priscilla Nyokabi said: “Tunataka Kenya yetu hii tuweze kuenda kila mahali, ndiyo sababu tumekuja Garissa, tuende Nyeri ili kuwe na maendeleo kila mahali.”

Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi added: “Hii maneno ya ufisadi tunasema tuache ufisadi.”

The presence of Youth and Gender Affairs CAS Racheal Shebesh in Embrace Kenya meetings has sparked anger from ‘Inua Mama’, a lobby group of women leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto.

According to Kandara MP Alice Wahome, “She (Shebesh) should tender her resignation immediately because the way she is working is not like a public servant…ni wakati mwema wa kumuondoa kwa kazi, aende akapiganie viti za siasa kwa sababu hivyo ndiyo anataka.”

Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa echoed the sentiments saying:”Na ninaamini hakuna vile Rais Uhuru alikaa chini nao, akawaambia waunde team waiite Embrace…halafu mtakuwa chini yangu…sisi pia tuko chini yake, wamama wote wa Kenya wako chini yake…kwa hivyo waache kutumia jina la Rais…”

Shebesh however remains unmoved by calls for her resignation or sacking.

“Kuna watu wanafikiria hii serikali iko na presidents wawili, lakini niwaambie, hii serikali iko na president mmoja na ni Uhuru Kenyatta…mimi sijaelewa kwa nini Shebesh au Gedi au Wanga au Elachi, tukiongea mambo ha handshake ya Uhuru na Raila tunaambiwa tuko na makosa na wengine wakiongea yao, wanasema hao ndiyo wanajua kesho sanaaa,” Shebesh said.
