Anxiety as Machakos Level Five Hospital blood bank runs dry

Residents planning to seek treatment that requires blood transfusion at Machakos Level Five Hospital may be in for a rude shock as there as allegations that the blood blank has run dry.

This emerged after a patient who was transferred from Kangundo Level Five Hospital was transferred to the facility for cesarean section but was turned away due to lack of enough blood at the bank.

The patient was forced to seek treatment at a private health facility within Makueni town.

Confirming the incident, Medical Officer at Ministry Health Care Dr. Jacks Nthanga acknowledged that there was shortage of blood at the hospital but assured that the issue would be resolved soon.

He however denied allegations that five expectant mothers were discharged from the hospital due to shortage of blood.

On Tuesday, the Machakos County government through the department of health services kicked off a blood donation drive.

Machakos level 5 hospital medical superintendent Hellen Nzuki said medical staff have been dispatched to various worship centers to carryout the exercise.

She appealed to members of the public to donate blood, saying: “We want to boost our blood bank capacity in all key health institutions to ensure timely handling of emergency cases in order to save lives.”
