Any IEBC staff who compromises election will be punished – Chebukati

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, on Friday issued a  stern warning against staff who will breach Electoral Code of Conduct or compromise credibility of August 8 polls.

Chebukati said that the IEBC will not protect any staff member who compromises the elections or breaks the law.

He said that there are laws to deal with anyone who may rob Kenyans of a free and fair elections and that everyone will carry their own cross.

“There are fines of Ksh 1 million and one year imprisonment. As a commission, we will not protect any staff member who breaches the law and makes Kenyans not to have a free and fair election,” said Chebukati

Speaking to the media at Bomas of Kenya, the electoral body moved to assure Kenyans of a free and fair poll urging Kenyans not to judge the poll body based on the events of 2013.

“Don’t judge us by the events of 2013. We came into office in January and every day we have been working hard to deliver a transparent and accountable election.”

Chebukati, who was accompanied by diplomats, civil society representatives, religious leaders and members of the public also dismissed the issue of dead voters voting in the hotly contested August polls saying that KIEMS technology in place can identify only genuine voters who turn up to vote.

“There will be no multiple voting because you will be identified once and vote once. Any attempt to vote twice will be detected and it’s an electoral offence.”

“The KIEMS system will update on voter turnout and distribution of ballot papers every three hours. There is no room for rigging in this election,” he added.
