APs detained over killing of 16-year-old

A Mwingi court has today ordered for the detention of two Administration Police officers arrested in connection with the shooting of a  16-year-old schoolboy at Kanginga village, Wednesday night.

The officers, who were attached to Kabati AP Camp in Kitui West, were arrested on Thursday evening after witnesses recorded statements concerning the 11.30PM incident that led to demise of Nicholas Munyoki Muthuia, a standard seven pupil.

The two suspects –  Abdi Mohammed Hassan ,23, and James Benedict Oduor, 25, –  appeared before Principal Magistrate  Kibet Sambu who gave the police a nod to detain  them for five days.

“I have carefully considered this application which is supported by a sworn affidavit. The offence is quite serious and I hereby order police to put the suspects under a five days remand at Mwingi Police Station, to allow them complete investigations,” he said.

Mr Sambu said if the investigations establish that the two officers were involved in the killing, they will be taken to Kitui High Court, where the case will be heard.

The two are suspected to have shot the boy when they accompanied Kitui County Government enforcement officers to apprehend sand harvesters at Kanginga stream.

According to residents, a scuffle ensued between the officers and sand loaders prompting the shooting.

Police said the boy who was shot on the right thigh and left hand.  He died while undergoing treatment at a Mwingi Hospital.
