Armed Turkana Morans hunt down alleged land grabbers

Thousands of armed Turkana Morans have flocked Kanamkemer area in Central Turkana in pursuit of a cartel accused of planning to grab a one thousand-acre piece of land located next to Mt. Kenya University.

Speaking to Citizen TV Kenya, one of the Morans, Zakaria Eyanae, said they were tipped off that a cartel was conspiring to hive out their grazing land.

The irate mob, armed with spears, bows, arrows, machetes, and pangas, attacked a police reservist accused of escorting and protecting the alleged grabbers.

The guard is said to have shot four bullets in the air threatening to gun down the Morans before they descended on him, snatching off his gun, and inflicting serious injuries on him.

According to the Morans, the grabbers, who are based in Lodwar, have been taking over any free land and selling it without informing the owners.

“We are aware of the cartel that has sold all the grabbed land within Lodwar town and are now moving to the environs of the town encroaching our grazing land,” said one of the protestors, James Choki.

On his side, the Chief Officer for Lands in Turkana County, Mark Ewesit, condemned the land grabbing saying the county government has not authorized any allocation of plots and that what is being executed by the cartel is illegal.

Turkana Central police boss, Joel Kirui, declined to comment on the issue saying that the two groups have complicated the matter by acting without an official notice from the court.
