Arrest sugar cartels, MP tells govt

The Lugari Member of Parliament Ayub Savula has called on the government to arrest and charge suspected cartel instead of pointing fingers on those opposing the Kenya-Uganda sugar deal.

Savula, who was speaking in Eldoret when he visited one of the victims of the Lamakanda lightning strike, accused Deputy President William Ruto of pointing accusing fingers and doing nothing about the suspected sugar cartels.

The MP said it was heart-breaking to see the Deputy President, in his position, talking without taking any action.

However, the MP said that he supports the deal allowing Kenya to import sugar from Uganda adding that the sugar shortage can best be addressed through such imports.

“It is okay for Kenya to import sugar from Uganda since we have a shortage. However, Uganda’s sugar alone is not enough to cater for our deficit,” said Savula.

His sentiments come even as the debate on whether President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Uganda counterpart Yoweri Museveni signed a deal allowing sugar imports into the country continues.

Although the government has denied existence of such a deal, the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) insists that it (deal) was signed and its details must be made public.

The purported signing of the import deal comes barely two months after the government injected Ksh 1 billion to revive Mumias Sugar Limited – Kenya’s largest sugar miller.
