Kalonzo: If all Kenyans were scouts, there would be no sugar with mercury

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has stated that Kenya would be a better place if all its citizens were scouts.

Kalonzo spoke on Tuesday when he commissioned the World Scouts Parliamentary Union, Kenyan Chapter, at the Scouts Movement headquarters at Rowallan Camp along Ngong road.

The former Vice President, who previously served as the Scouts Chief Commissioner, said: “If all Kenyans were scouts there would be no corruption, no stealing, no selling of sugar with mercury, because this is a leadership academy.”

Kalonzo’s statement comes amidst a raging debate over claims that a host of Kenyan parliamentarians allegedly received bribes to shoot down the sugar report. National Assembly Minority Leader John Mbadi has, however, insisted that the report tabled in Parliament was dismissed because it was defective.

The Wiper leader further urged the leadership of Nyeri County to take bold steps in preserving and maintaining the historic site which attracts thousands of tourists, scouts and Girl Guides from across the world every year.

The remains of the World’s Scouts Movement founder and his wife Olave are buried at the Baden Powell historical garden in Nyeri.

Kalonzo said Kenya is a pivotal country in the scouting movement by the virtue of hosting the remains of the founder of the movement. He proposed that Nyeri be gazetted by the UNESCO as a world heritage site.

“Kenya enjoys a massive 1.4 million scout members making it the largest youth movement in Africa and sixth in the World; plans are underway to grow this movement to 4 million thus becoming the largest in the world. I feel privileged to be a part of this,” added Kalonzo.
