Athletics Kenya President Isaiah Kiplagat Steps Aside

Suspended Athletics Kenya President, Isaiah Kiplagat

Mr Kiplagat, who is the longest serving AK chairman, has announced that he will relinquish the position to focus on his campaign for the IAAF Vice President post during the body’s congress just before August summer World Championships in Beijing, China.

“You know I am a candidate for first Vice President of IAFF and for that matter I need time to reflect on that and see the way forward,” he said.

“I have to submit my manifesto which I’m working on and for that I have been allowed by the Executive Committee to take three months leave from May 1st after our AGM on March 30.

Kiplagat said that even if he does not succeed to be IAAF vice chair, he does not see himself taking back his position, noting that he will still be an Executive Member of AK as long as he remains a council member of IAAF.

“If I succeed, then those acting will be confirmed but even if I don’t, I am sure they will be confirmed because it may not be necessary for me to come back anyway. So in case I remain a member of the council of IAAF I will still be Executive Member of AK,” he said.

INVESTIGATION INTO DOPING

Kiplagat has been AK chair for 23 years, having been first elected in 1992 to succeed the then chair Mike Boit.

In his new quest, Kiplagat will face main opposition from among others United Arab Emirates Athletics President Ahmad al Kamali.

Retired General Tuwei has since been picked to take over as acting chairman of Athletics Kenya, with Paul Mutui taking up the Senior Vice Chairperson position.

An individual will be appointed to manage athletes left without agents after the suspension of Rosa and Associates and Gerald Van der Veen.

Kenya police, Athletics Kenya and the Anti Doping Agency of Kenya will handle investigations into doping among Kenyan athletes.

The two renowned agents who manage the bulk of Kenyan athletes, Rosa and Associates and Gerald Van der Veen, have been suspended for 6 months.
