AU heads of state to discuss crisis in South Sudan

Leaders of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development – (IGAD) and the African Union Ad-Hoc Committee on South Sudan will on Friday hold a meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Newly appointed Vice President Taban Deng is expected at the meeting, which will among other things seek a political solution to the crisis in South Sudan.

The meeting will also delve into the prevailing situation in Juba after violence erupted between factions loyal to President Salva Kiir and his former Vice President Riek Machar.

The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn, who is also the current chairperson of the IGAD assembly of heads of state and government.

Heads of State from the region and representatives from the UN, AU, JMEC and IGAD will also be in attendance.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to leave this afternoon for the one-day meeting that has seen the UN call on leaders to address sexual violence crimes in Juba.

A joint communiqué is expected later on today.
