Auditor general orders county to return Sh3.6m

Meru County Government has been instructed by the Auditor General, Edward Ouko, to recover the Sh3.6 million from ten officials of the County Executive Committee (CEC).

According to Ouko, every official wrongfully received Sh360,000 as a pay increase without his consent.

However, Council of Governors Chair Peter Munya has voiced opposition to the auditor general’s report saying that the Meru County Government was not involved the audit.

Ouko further criticised the Meru County Government for assisting Miraa farmers to file a lawsuit against the United Kingdom (UK) over their ban on importing the substance.

It has been a year since the UK government imposed a ban on Miraa, after reclassifying it as a class “C” drug alongside tranquilisers and steroids.

That move jolted the Khat market, resulting in a Miraa supply glut that not only pushed down Miraa prices but also the livelihoods of hundreds of Miraa farmers in Meru County.

Governor appealed to Deputy President William Ruto for intervention to ensure the Miraa market is re-opened and new market reached as well.
