Babu Owino accuses Kilimani DCIO of unfair treatment

University of Nairobi Student leader Babu Owino has accused Kilimani DCIO Phyllis Kanini of unfair treatment.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the SONU chair claimed that the DCIO has a personal vendetta against him and pushes for his arrest even when he has not broken the law.

“The Kilimani DCIO seems to have something personal against me because of the way she has been handling my cases,” said Owino.

“She was solely behind my arraignment in court today even after officers at the Kilimani police station agreed to release me after my arrest Thursday morning.”

Babu, who has expressed interest in vying for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat, further accused Ms Kanini of pushing for his arraignment in a case where he is alleged to have slapped a police officer.

“In the case where I was alleged to have slapped a police officer, we had agreed that we will get an out-of-court settlement with the officer, but the DCIO insisted on taking the matter to court,” said the Embakasi East parliamentary aspirant.

The Kilimani DCIO has however refuted the claims, saying everything she has done so far is in line with her mandate as the officer in charge of Kilimani Police Station.

“I have nothing personal against Babu Owino; I am the lead officer in several cases against Mr Owino, including hate speech and other unlawful incidents and therefore it is my job to monitor his actions. What I am doing is solely guided by the law and aimed at ensuring order,” she said.

“Babu Owino’s arrest today was as a result of his misconduct at the Kilimani Police Station where he rowdily attempted to free two suspects who are in police custody. No one should be allowed to bring disorder at police stations.”

Phyllis further noted that she has received several calls from concerned parties urging her to forgive Babu Owino over his apparent misconduct, insisting that she has no powers to let the case go as she is not the aggrieved party on the matter.

She stated that it was necessary to take Babu Owino to court for storming the police station on Thursday to avoid a case where the SONU chair would reverse the situation and accuse police officers of assaulting him.

“He has already began claiming that officers at Kilimani Police Stataion had assaulted him during his arrest which is not true. In fact it is him who was roughing up our officers,” she said.

Mr Owino has however denied assaulting offices at the Kilimani Police Station.

One of the police officers, who sought anonymity, has however confirmed that he was roughed up in the melee.

The SONU chair was arraigned Thursday afternoon and released on a Ksh5,000 cash bail.
