Babu Owino breaks silence on Ksh.7M DJ Evolve hospital bill

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has finally broken his silence on the controversial Ksh.7 million hospital bill of Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, which sparked mixed reactions online last week.

DJ Evolve, whom the legislator reportedly shot on the neck at a Kilimani night club in January this year, is recuperating at the Nairobi Hospital and an estimate of the bill racked up so far totals Ksh.6,684,000.

Mr. Owino has since however reiterated his commitment towards catering for the victim’s medical expenses adding that “it should be the last thing the victim and the family should be made worrying about at this particular point.”

Citing documents filed in court on January 27, 2020, the MP stated that there has been tremendous progress in terms of DJ Evolve’s recovery and that he has “in fact become stable.”

He also dismissed reports that he abandoned the bill after his initial payment of Ksh.600,000 saying he has in fact – to date – paid an additional Ksh.5 million.

“Unfortunately the court order indicated that these monies were to be paid directly to the Honourable Courts which would then release the funds, on a monthly basis, to Nairobi Hospital where the victim is hospitalized,” said the MP, in a statement through lawyer Duncan Okatch.

“This essentially means that our client has no control of the funds once he has deposited the same in court. It is instructive to note that our client voluntarily, and without coercion or court orders, paid an initial sum of Ksh.600,000 and has openly undertaken to cater fully for the medical expenses of the victim until the victim fully recovers.”

The statement further stated: “This position stands whether or not a court order exists, and regardless of whether the amount payable to Nairobi Hospital surpasses Ksh.10 million.”

A Nairobi court previously ordered Mr. Owino to pay Ksh.10 million in four monthly instalments which would go towards the hospital bill.

The bill records Ksh1.66 million in doctors fees, Ksh.1.3 million in pharmacy charges, Ksh.913,683 in nursing charges and Ksh.990,000 in room rent.

There is also a physiotherapy charge of 494,100 among other charges.
