Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino on Monday enrolled back to school a Multimedia University student who was forced to drop out and become a security guard in Mombasa over lack of fees.

The legislator, flanked by a host of student leaders, escorted Cosmas Mutua back to school and personally paid his semester fee of Ksh.46,300.

Mr. Owino narrated his own experience growing up as a young learner in a humble family that was always plagued by the inability to pay school fee, adding that it was this reflection that pushed him to lend Cosmas a hand.

“The same opportunity that I was given to study at the University of Nairobi (UoN)…the same opportunity that I was given when we were struggling to raise fees…I felt it in my heart that I should give that same opportunity to Cosmas to clear his education,” he stated.

“I would like to assure Cosmas that we’re going to ensure that he completes his university education, so it’s upon him to make sure he works hard.”

The vocal lawmaker further urged the student to make the best out of the second chance so that he may one day also lend a helping hand to another in the same situation as him.

“When I heard the story of my comrade Cosmas who dropped out because of fees and decided to be a watchman, I knew I had a responsibility to help. This is not for me. This is so that our comrade can in turn help another when his time comes,” he said.

The media student, on his part, thanked the former UoN student leader, further vowing not to waste the opportunity.

He said: “I wish to express my gratitude to Babu Owino for lifting me up. To be a watchman was not my decision. And I want to assure you, Mr. Owino, that I will not let you down…I will study.”

The story of Cosmas hit the headlines in October last year, prompting the MP to take to his social media pages seeking information about him.

The two finally met on October 29, 2019, and Mr. Owino promised to fully sponsor the student’s education “till he graduates.”
