Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino and his wife Fridah Muthoni Ongili on Tuesday launched an empowerment initiative aimed towards uplifting women in the constituency.
While kicking off the table banking programme, the legislator lauded women in the constituency saying they are the “driving force of development in Embakasi.”
Mr. Owino, in a statement to newsrooms after the launch, said: “We discussed ways and means of empowering our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters by enhancing table banking in the constituency to ensure more women are reached and in greater more meaningful ways.”
“Thereafter, Fridah, the Patron of this effort and I led the distribution of bales of Unga to the more than 1,000 women who attended and I made a guarantee to engage financial institutions to back our table banking initiative.”
Mr. Owino further separated the initiative from politics saying it was a purely development-oriented project.
“There is no ODM or Jubilee or Wiper in this project; there is no tribalism of Luo or Kikuyu or Kamba in this… this is about development and progress of our women. Anybody who wants to politic can wait for 2022,” he said.
Mrs. Ongili, on her part, lauded her husband, the MP, for continuously pushing for development projects in the constituency.
“I want to tell my husband, and I know I usually tell him this in the house but public praise is also important, you are doing a great job. I usually hear him demanding feedback from contractors about such things as stalled road constructions,” she stated.
