Baby dies, 4 hospitalised after measles vaccination

A measles vaccination exercise turned tragic in Bomet County after a 9-month-old child died and four others were hospitalised after receiving the jab.

The five children aged between nine and twelve months had been vaccinated at Mogokosiek Health Centre before later developing body swellings.

According to medics at Tenwek Hospital, where the children are receiving treatment, a postmortem will be conducted on Thursday to give a clear picture of whether the measles vaccine was expired.

The doctors at Tenwek Hospital further noted that the children, who were admitted on Tuesday, January 16 are out of danger and responding well to treatment.

Bomet County Deputy Governor Dr. Hillary Barchok said during the immunization exercise 19 children aged below two years were immunised.

Medics have been dispatched to the affected villages to asses the situation.
