Bad news for all of you who use other peoples Netflix accounts

Top American content streaming service Netflix has announced plans to put in measures to prevent users from sharing accounts or swapping passwords.

In an interview with Newsweek, Netflix Chief Product Officer Greg Peter said that the company is looking for ways to limit password sharing in the platform’s Q3 2019.

Currently, Netflix’s terms and conditions currently state that the service and any content viewed through the service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.

According to Netflix, usage even on multiple gadgets should be within the same household.

”Currently, multiple users can share one account by setting up different viewing profiles using one login,” reports Newsweek.

Netflix did not announce any immediate plans on the regulation but said that they are currently monitoring user activity.

They however indicated that if an account is found being used by people living outside the account owner’s household, it may be suspended.

Netflix charges $8.99 (about Ksh.1,000) monthly for the most basic package that allows streaming on one screen.

A $12.99 (about Ksh.1,300) is charged on users allowing streaming on two screens while $15.99 (about Ksh.1,700) allows streaming on 4 screens at a go.

According to Magid, a research firm conducting a survey for CNBC network, close to 14 million Netflix users out of 137 million subscribed to the $9.95 (Ksh.1,000) package do not pay.

Based on the survey, the streaming service is making about $135 million (about Ksh.140 billion) on account of just 10% of the 137 million customers.
