Bahari FM settles football players hospital bill

The station staff, led by Head Of Radio Wilmot Nzaro and sports presenter Mkalla Wa Mwambodze also known as ËœPande la raia", came to the aid of Mlaleo's Young Rovers player Omari Hamisi, 14, after learning of his situation when a story of his rotting leg and a huge hospital bill was highlighted in a local publication.

While presenting a cheque worth Sh355,000 at Sayyid Fatma in Mlaleo, Nzaro said his colleagues at Bahari FM were touched by the story highlighted on his sports program Kutubuti na Mkalla Wa Mwambodze.

Omari's story had a great impact at my work place and to my fans. We therefore decided to do something to help him. It is sad to see a talent go to waste yet there are people who are earning billions from such talents," said Wilmot.

He added that drug abuse, unemployment and criminal activities will drastically reduce if county governments invested in nurturing talents and maximising their economic potential.

Omari and her mother broke down to tears as they expressed their gratitude to Bahari FM while receiving the Cheque. The cheque will cater for the hospital bill and medication.

Omari is said to have picked an injury two months ago during a practice session.

He however could not afford proper medical attention and his team does not have medical cover for its players. He was therefore left with no option but to take traditional treatment and pain killers.

His situation seemed to improve but after a month of muscle stretching and massage, his situation worsened. His leg began blistering and rotting rendering traditional treatment useless.

This forced his mother, who is unemployed and earns a living from selling perfume, commonly known as marashi ya reja reja, could not take her son to a doctor for proper medical attention.

Upon examination he was found to have a severe tissue damage. The doctor then recommended amputation. Something the player refused, forcing his family to seek a second opinion. To the player's relief, the second opinion did not recommend amputation though it was something they could not afford.

According to the doctor grafting was the only solution to his problem. This is a treatment that was going to cost over Sh250,000.
