Banditry hotbeds to get more cops

The government now says it will hire more police reservists and deploy them to cattle-rustling prone areas to assist the police in combating the vice and other criminal activities fueled by the retrogressive practice.

Addressing a public rally at Kabel in Baringo on Wednesday, Deputy President William Ruto announced that from September this year, the government will employ more reservists to help in fighting crime in the mainly pastoral areas.

The DP added that 600 youth from Baringo South Constituency will be selected to work under the National Youth Service (NYS) in fostering peace in the area.

Ruto expressed concerns over the destruction of several schools in the area following heavy infighting between communities involved in cross-border cattle raids.

Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery threatened communal punishment to communities whose members are involved in cattle-rustling.

Nkaissery has also appealed to people holding illegal firearms, to register them at the chief’s office, or nearest police station.
