Bank robbers busted breaking into KCB, Kirinyaga

Police on Sunday, Christmas Eve, foiled a bank robbery at the Kenya Commercial Bank, Kerugoya branch in Kirinyaga County.

Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga Police Commander David Kirui said the armed gangsters were busted after an alarm went on while they were removing blocks from a wall adjacent to the KCB building.

“There was an attempt to break into the Kenya Commercial Bank but the alarm sounded and our officers who were on patrol quickly responded. The gangsters managed to escape but we are hunting them down,” said Mr. Kirui.

The police commander assured that security has been beefed up in all major towns in Kirinyaga and highways during this festive season

The incident comes a month after daring robbers stole Ksh.50 million from Kenya Commercial Bank, Thika branch, in one of the most daring bank robberies in recent Kenyan history.

In the Thika incident, the robbers dug a tunnel for six months under the bank – which is directly opposite Thika police station – from a nearby building and accessed the strong room where they made away with the money.

Four suspects have since been arrested and arraigned in court in connection with the daring heist.

Police also recovered Ksh.17 million which was part of the Ksh.50 million stolen from the KCB Thika branch on November 20, 2017.
