Baringo leaders call for blood banks

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi says he will table a Bill in the Senate that will provide for setting up of blood bank facilities in all the 47 counties, saying that such facilities will bring blood infusion services closer to the people.

He was speaking during the burial of   Marcellus Kimutai Kiprono, the son to former mayor John Kiprono.

The deceased was involved in a road accident along Marigat-Kabarnet road on the evening of April 20, 2016.

Baringo County Governor Benjamin Cheboi said as much as the counties have equipped the referral hospitals and increased personnel to improve service provision; absence of blood banks remains a major concern in emergency situations.

“We need someone to do a private member motion to compel the Ministry to establish blood banks in every sub county and every county” he said

Baringo senator added that it was a criminal act for private hospitals to turn away emergency patients who are in need of treatment.

The county depends on blood from Eldoret and Nakuru – a situation that complicated the management of emergency cases.

Kisumu and Nairobi are the only places with blood banks that have blood screening. He urged the residents to donate blood.
