Baringo MCA, Chiefarrested for allegedly inciting locals to boycott census

A Member of County Assembly and a Chief in Baringo County were on Monday arrested after allegedly inciting residents to boycott the ongoing census exercise.

Ilchamus Ward MCA Joseph Leparsalach and Salabani Location Chief Francis Olekipirich were arrested pending arraignment on Tuesday at the Kabarnet Law Courts.

Confirming the incident, Baringo County Commissioner Henry Wafula said the two will be charged with incitement.

Irrigation Principal Secretary Fred Segor warned that anyone who blocks the exercise will face the law, urging locals to corporate with the enumerators.

Several other people have since been arrested over various offences during the ongoing 2019 census.

A man and his wife were arrested in Kisumu for attacking a chief and village elder who had accompanied census officers at their house in Obunga slums.

The man, identified as Richard Ochieng, bit the fingers of a village elder while his wife hit the area Assitant chief with a piece of brick, hurting him on his thigh.

Still in Kisumu, two people were arrested in connection to the gang raping of a census enumerator in Maseno on Saturday night.

Five other people were arrested in various areas in the larger Nyanza region for allegedly masquerading as census officials.
