Baringo Residents Protest Over Insecurity

The protesters claimed that the government had failed to protect them and their property and demanded that more security be deployed in the area to contain the rise of banditry attacks and cattle rustling occasioned by suspected criminals from the Pokot Community.

The protest came a day after the cancellation of CORD Leader Raila Ondinga’s tour of the area after it was reported that his meeting would interrupted by the local community.

Residents say over a hundred people have been killed and thousands of livestock stolen by suspected raiders from the Pokot community.

Over 30 schools have been closed as a result of the insecurity forcing locals to flee to safer areas.

Asman Kamama allegedly protecting criminals

The residents marched from Muchongoi through Kabel to Kirima area where they criticized the government over failure to contain the crime meted on them by suspected raiders allegedly from the Pokot community.

The residents demanded that the government move with speed to contain the situation before matters get out of hands.

They also accused Tiaty Member of Parliament Asmam Kamama of allegedly protecting criminals and demanded his immediate resignation as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Security in the National Assembly.

Insecurity in the area has continued to cause tension among the locals leading to the closure of schools and markets for fear of banditry attacks, slowing down the local economy.

This is despite the assurance by the government that insecurity has been curbed and life back to normalcy.
