Bars near schools to be closed down, administrator says

The Embu deputy county commissioner has ordered the closure of all bars near learning institutions with immediate effect, and warned those found contravening the order would be arrested and prosecuted.

Abdlatiff Nueh said bars operating near learning institutions were in violation of the alcohol act and should be closed down.

He added that the bars have become a nuisance to the institutions’ learning environment and that their operation would not be allowed to jeopardize the students’ future.

The administrator stated that he had cancelled all licenses that were allowing the operation of bars from 8pm to 11 pm, terming them null and void.

Abdlatiff said that a committee would inspect bar premises before recommending them to be issued with licenses, adding that various bars in the area had received licences before their premises were inspected.

He further noted that the crackdown on illicit brew and other drug substances will continue, as some Embu County residents had lost their lives due to illicit brews.
