Raila, Mudavadi reach coalition deal

Opposition leaders, Raila Odinga, and Musalia Mudavadi on Tuesday buried the hatchet and agreed to form a super alliance in a bid to dislodge Jubilee from power in the 2017 poll.

Speaking at Laikipia hotel the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) party delegates meeting, the leaders said the super alliance will be formed by February next year.

Both leaders regretted their political split in 2013 that saw them divide the Western region vote, denying the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) coalition a much needed voting block.

The two leaders accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto, of abetting corruption, nepotism and tribalism.

Odinga promised the Jubilee Party a bruising battle ahead of 2017 General Election as he urged people to arm themselves with identity and voter’s cards.

“Come February next year and business will not be usual. This government is full of thieves who need to be taken home. We want to bring change in this country,” said Odinga.

The CORD leader decried the theft of public funds through the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMIS) even as President Kenyatta and his deputy watch the looting of government resources.

The ODM party leader hailed Tanzania’s President, John Pombe Magufuli, who has already jailed former top taxman and ports authority bosses in his first year in power over involvement in corruption.

In addition, Odinga also praised Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari for jailing five governors, several government ministers and state officials over corruption-related offences.

In a blistering attack on the Head of State, Odinga faulted the President for allegedly using propaganda to ascend to power by claiming it was him (Odinga) who took them to the International Criminal Court in The Hague over the 2007/2008 elections.

“Former President Mwai Kibaki and I took a motion to Parliament proposing that we have a local special court to address the post election cases but they refused. They said let’s not be vague, let’s go to Hague.”

On the other hand, the Amani National Congress (ANC) leader, Musalia, Mudavadi, said the National Super Alliance (NASA) was the best vehicle to defeat Jubilee in next year’s presidential elections.

He also questioned the source of money being spent in Harambees by government officials especially over the weekends.

“They are moving around with sacks full money. Where do they get the Ksh 18 million they are dishing out in Harambees every weekend?” questioned Mudavadi.

Mudavadi chided the national government for failing to implement a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) deal signed in 2013 seeking to improve terms of employment for doctors and nurses yet churning out millions in fundraisers every weekend.

The super alliance, Nasa, now brings together regional heavyweights Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Bungoma Senator, Moses Wetang’ula.

Last week, Odinga was in Bomet in a move perceived as charm offensive to woo Bomet Governor, Isaac Ruto, who has been linked with KANU leaders Gideon Moi and Nick Salat.
