BBI Bill to be introduced at the National Assembly on Thursday
The draft Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020 popularly referred to as the BBI Bill is to be introduced at the National Assembly on Thursday.
Speaker Justin Muturi directed that the Bill be introduced in the House for its First Reading on March 4, 2021
The Clerk of the National Assembly has been directed to urgently obtains sufficient copies of the Bill.
The copies are to be in the form that the Bill was presented to the 47 county assemblies by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enable introduction into the House as directed.
So far, 43 counties have passed the BBI Bill and three (Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Baringo) have rejected it.
On Tuesday, Mandera County Assembly passed the the Bill after unanimously voting in its support.
Uasin Gishu is the only county assembly that is yet to debate the Bill.
The constitutional threshold of at least 24 assemblies was surpassed last week.
And on February 25, President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted a section of political party leaders at State House, Nairobi where they issued a joint statement expressing their gratitude to the County Assemblies that supported the BBI Bill.
The leaders included Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Gideon Moi (KANU), Charity Ngilu (Narc) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya).
They called on all Kenyans to support the initiative, saying it will go along in addressing longstanding issues affecting the country.
“Today, on behalf of a grateful nation, we convey our immense gratitude to all our County Assemblies for their monumental support for this Popular Initiative. Their bold action sets the foundation upon which Kenya shall advance inter-generational equity, realize gender parity, guarantee equal opportunities for all, and give each Kenyan a bigger slice of our shared prosperity,” Gideon Moi said in the joint statement.
The political leaders pledged to embark on civic education to sensitize the public on the gains of the Building Bridges Initiave (BBI).
