Be bold and innovative, President Kenyatta tells universities

President Uhuru Kenyatta today urged universities to be bold and innovative so that they contribute positively to the country’s development.

Speaking at the opening of Zetech University Complex in Ruiru., the President said universities should be dynamic in moulding a new generation of Kenyans who have the skills to take the country forward.

He called on institutions of higher learning to diversify the range of courses they offer beyond the traditional mainstays to tap into the innovation age.

“I urge our local universities to be bold, innovative and dynamic; to be leaders in helping mould a new generation of Kenyans who will have the necessary training and knowledge to take full advantage of all the opportunities offered by the world in this century,” he said.

President Kenyatta said it was also time to acknowledge the pivotal role played by private universities in complementing the Government’s initiatives towards enhanced access to higher education.

“Private Universities are stepping into an existing gap and helping to meet the burning desire of our people to improve themselves through post-basic education,” he said.

Education is not a business

President Kenyatta called on private universities to remain dedicated to their role in increasing access to higher education that is affordable.

He urged them not be distracted by the desire to make quick profits, but rather stick to their calling to provide a service that is essential to Kenyans.

“The provision of education is not a business; it is a sacred calling that typifies society’s never ending drive to continuously improve itself,” said the President.

The Head of State also asked students to make proper use of their time in university, adding that it is not time for them to relax.

“Joining University is not an achievement in itself; it is the beginning of your lifelong journey of continual self-development and perpetual learning,” said the President.

He also urged universities to recognize that the institution is its people and not the structures.

“Treasure your students and staff, treat them with the respect they deserve, listen to them, nurture them and yours shall be a future of limitless possibilities,” he said.

The launch of Zetech University is a culmination of a 17 year journey, starting with an idea by Eng Ken Mbiuki who started private ICT classes for his colleagues at the University of Nairobi.

Zetech later became a diploma college and the family run business became ‘comfortable’ with its achievement.

But as Kareke Mbiuki narrated at the function today, it was an encounter with Deputy President William Ruto that gave them the energy to work harder to become a university.

“When the DP was the Minister for Higher Education he encouraged us and told us our journey should not end at the moon but should continue to the stars. He told us not to rest until we get university status,” he said.

Eng Ken is now the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the university while the MP is the Patron.

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, Majority Leader Aden Duale, Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi and Chairperson of the Education Committee Sabina Chege (Muranga Women Rep) were among other leaders who addressed the function.
