Beef up security in schools to deal with arson cases Nzili

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Chairman Mudzo Nzili now wants public secondary schools to invest in security to curb the rising cases of insecurity and arson in schools.

The KNUT boss said most schools had employed ‘elderly’ watchmen who were unable to guard their institutions, especially when they are pitted against rowdy students.

Addressing journalists in Watamu area of Kilifi county, Nzili said it was difficult to curb the rising insecurity when schools are have few and elderly watchmen.

Admitting that the recent arson incidents are worrying , he asked all stakeholders to play their part in combating the destructive trend.

The KNUT chairman also hailed the Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for his work in curbing examination cheating.

KNUT has also welcomed the move by KNEC to pay teachers for the work they do during the national exam period. He said head teachers worked hard, but their efforts have been recognized.
