Betting, John DeMathew, Wendy Waeni most searched on Google

The English Premier League (EPL) topped the Google Search trends in the August search queries; with Liverpool vs Arsenal and Manchester United vs Chelsea being the most searched matches.

Betting came second after a recent government directive revoking various licences. This also led to the suspension of their Paybill and SMS shortcode numbers. Kenyans however still went online to search for betting sites that survived the crackdown including Bet 254, 22 Bet, Shabiki Power 17 and Odi Bet.

Popular Kikuyu Benga musician John Ng’ang‘a De’Mathew was the third most searched query following his death on August 18 after a road accident on Thika Superhighway in which he rammed onto a truck.

Wendy Waeni, the 11-year-old gymnast who went viral after accusing her former manager Joe Mwangi of denying her proceeds from her performances since 2014, came fourth.

Brazillian defender David Luiz was the fifth searched item after the completion of his £8million deal signing from Chelsea to Arsenal.

Sixth on the list was billionaire Humphrey Kariuki Ndegwa after his numerous run-ins with the Diretorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over alleged Ksh14.5 billion tax evasion in which an international arrest warrant was issued against him.

The seventh search query was the Amazon fires in South America that intensified in August, followed by Kenyan gospel musician Jimmy Gait after he stated that tests conducted in India revealed he had been misdiagnosed by Kenyan doctors and would have lost his voice if he had  undergone a throat surgery as they advised.

The ninth search query was popular American musical fantasy film The Wizard of Oz as it celebrated 80 years.

The tenth trending search was Joe Mwangi, former manager of the child star Wendy Waeni, after detectives from DCI Child Protection Unit issued an arrest warrant for him in connection with forgery and issuing threats to Wendy’s mother. He has since been arrested and arraigned in court.
