Beware of above normal rainfall, weatherman warns

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of above normal rainfall in four regions across the country during the short rainy season from October to December.

A statement to newsrooms on Tuesday also warned of lightning strikes in Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega and Bungoma counties as well as flooding in Budalang’i and Kano plains.

Various parts of the country are likely to experience outbreak of diseases that are associated with excessive water such as malaria…

“Flash floods are likely to occur over several parts of the country especially during the peak month of November. This may lead to transport problems especially during rush hours and more so in areas where the roads become impassable when it rains, ” the weatherman said.

The four regions where above average rainfall is likely to occur include Western, Eastern, Central and North Rift.

Water levels in dams and other water catchment areas are also expected to rise which will in turn “improve the capacity for hydroelectric power generation.”

The last few months have seen Kenyans experience extreme cold weather which has at times forced airports to cancel or redirect flights to other destinations.
