Big blow to Alfred Mutua as election nullified

The election of Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has been nullified.

On Friday morning, the Court of Appeal ruled that election results declared by the returning officer failed the Constitutional test and could not be verified.

The judge further directed that fresh elections be conducted and the certificate issued to Mutua be set aside.

However, in response to the ruling, a defiant Mutua said: “We will move to the Supreme Court and we will still be in office till the Supreme Court rules otherwise.”

Mutua also indicated that he would still run for presidency in the 2022 general elections and expressed confidence that he would be elected President of Kenya.

“These are just small hurdles and it cannot kill my spirit,” he said.

His opponent Wavinya Ndeti, however applauded the court’s ruling saying that justice had been served.

The Wiper Party member further urged Governor Mutua to accept the ruling and allow the people of Machakos to elect their preferred leader.

She had moved to court on September 5 last year to challenge Mutua’s win in the August 8 election.

The former Kathiani MP claimed that the election was marred with election irregularities and illegalities.

She cited voter bribery and issuance of more than one ballot paper to voters.
