Big win for lecturers as gov’t agrees to pay them

The government has finally agreed to release Ksh 5.2 billion to pay the striking lecturers the remaining part of the Ksh 10 billion in their Collective Bargaining Agreement.

University Education Principal Secretary, Collete Suda, has said National Treasury has accepted to release the funds before July 31.

The government had already released Ksh 4.8 billion as part of the funds in the CBA to the university staff but they had rejected it demanding the full amount.

This comes after the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) vowed to push on with their strike until the government implements the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Addressing the press Thursday morning Secretary General, Constantine Wasonga, said they will not relent until their demands are met.
