Bishop arrested for allegedly exhuming bodies in Naivasha

A bishop in Naivasha has been arrested following allegations of exhuming dead bodies without court authorisation.

The cleric, Samuel Macharia, is said to have done this so as to lease the piece of land to quarry owners in Kinamba.

The bodies in question belonged to his wife, son and mother respectively and were to be relocated in an attempt to free up space for quarries purposing to harvest for construction materials.

In his defense, the suspect held that his acts were as a result of delayed court process as well as high costs by experts in the field to exhume the bodies.

Following the incident, relatives and neighbors jumped to his defence alleging that it was the norm in that area.

A niece to the suspect Rebecca Wambui said that the operation was carried out at night and woke up to find the graves flattened before the police and officials from public health intervened.

Speaking on phone, Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the incident and said the remains had been moved to Naivasha mortuary.

He added that the suspect is in police custody awaiting arraignment.
