Board shuts down NGO linked to Raila Odingas daughter

The Non-Governmental Organizations Coordination Board has de-registered an NGO linked to Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s daughter, Rosemary Odinga, over what it termed as ‘operating unauthorized bank accounts’.

In a letter seen by Citizen Digital, the board further accused the NGO, Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, of getting involved in political activities contrary to the provisions of the Act and Regulations.

Through its chair, Fazul Mahamed, the Board further indicated that the NGO was operating an illegal bank account titled “Payment of NASA Presidential agents” with Citi Bank contrary to the provisions of the Act and its attendant regulations.

“Your organization has breached the provisions of Section 12 (4) read together with Regulation 12 Clause 10 of the terms and conditions attached to your certificate of registration by opening and operating unauthorized bank accounts,” read the letter in part.

This comes just two days after Rosemary Odinga, through her Lawyer Paul Mwangi, wrote to the Fazul-led Board accusing them of dragging Rosemary’s name in the mud.

“It is an open secret, on whose behest you have carried this diabolical scheme and it is sad that dictates basic of human decency are now dispensable in political competition,” read the letter to Fazul.

In a letter dated August 2, 2017, Paul Mwangi and Co. Advocates indicated that Rosemary was not a trustee, patron or an official in any capacity at the Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya.

While terming the de-registering as a move of a strategy of political chicanery, the lawyers said that this was aimed at Raila Odinga in a bid to jeopardize his legitimate pursuit of the Office of the President.

The letter further noted that the said certificate of registration was still with the Board thus dismissing claims of bank accounts and its operations under the said NGO.

While noting the NGO has never commenced operations in Kenya or elsewhere, the lawyer further demanded an apology from the board.

On Wednesday, a statement signed by Raila’s Communications Director, Dennis Onyango, said the NGO applied for registration, submitted all the requirements and paid the registration fee but was yet to be issued with a certificate.
