Bodies of Kitui flood victims recovered after 23 days

Four bodies have been recovered from the notorious River Enziu, Kitui County 23 days after the car they were in was swept away by flash floods.

The four, who were travelling in a Toyota Probox were on their way to a burial ceremony at Nuu when they met their demise.

According to family members, the exercise had been delayed for lack of proper machinery.

Over the weekend, officers from the National Unit of Disaster Management, Kenya Red Cross and trucks from the National Youth Service (NYS) arrived at the scene to aid in the search for bodies which were later found buried in the mud.

The Kenya Red Cross team in Kitui County had pitched camp in the river for the last two weeks, where they had been conducting the search aided by the local residents.

The recovery adds onto the death toll caused by raging waters during the extreme rainy season which has left scores dead and others homeless .
