Body of Dr. Stephen Mogusu released after govt clears Ksh.204,000 bill

The family of Dr. Stephen Mogusu, a medical practitioner who succumbed to COVID-19 related complications, can rest easy after the government on Friday settled his bills at the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.

A letter from the health facility revealed that the doctor had a bill of Ksh.204,000 for the days he was admitted at the facility.

At the same time, yet another bill of Ksh.1.3 million from Komarok hospital was waived even as Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe told off the doctors’ unions for what he termed as sensationalising Mogusu’s death.

Stephen Mogusu, a 28-year-old doctor who until his death was working at the Machakos County COVID-19 isolation centre, passed on on the 7th of December, leaving behind a conflicted bill that was settled by the government.

CS Kagwe maintained that the same has been done for all doctors who lost their lives to the virus.

“The issue of genuine mourning and genuine feelings and the issue of using the young man’s death for union political purposes is disgusting,” said Kagwe.

According to a medical bill from Kenyatta University Teaching and Research Hospital, the two days that Dr. Mogusu spent at the facility accrued a sum of Ksh.204,618.

The bill included Ksh.40,000 paid as an admission package, Ksh.,42,000 for the bed, among other costs that included medication, the hospital stating that even the mortuary fee was catered for in his comprehensive NHIF cover.

Sources privy to the situation at Komarok hospital where mogusu was admitted for 13 days before being transferred to Kenyatta University hospital, revealed to Citizen TV that his bill of Ksh.1.3 million was waived by the hospital. Grounds for the waiver were however not given.

Kagwe admitted to delayed salaries, calling on doctors to appreciate the difficult times occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are not perfect we have made mistakes, but that is not to say that we don’t care. We care,” said Kagwe.

Mogusu became the 13th doctor in Kenya to succumb to COVID-19 related complications.
