Body wants Rosemary Odingas foundation accounts frozen

The Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Coordination Board now wants the Central Bank of Kenya to freeze accounts of a foundation linked to Raila Odinga’s daughter, Rosemary Odinga, alleging that it illegally received Ksh 530 million for political campaign funding.

In a letter addressed to CBK Governor, Dr. Patrick Ngugi Njoroge, the NGO board says that it has information that Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, a foundation associated with the former Prime Minister’s daughter, received the said amount from a George Soros Foundation.

The NGOs watchdog argues that Rosemary’s Foundation has breached the NGOs Co-ordination Act 1990, the NGOs Co-ordination Regulations 1992 as well as Terms and Conditions attached to the certificate of registration and its own constitution as it has received funds from an ‘aid associated with subterfuge political activities’.

Additionally, the Board says that the Foundation has opened and is operating several illegal unauthorized bank accounts contrary to Section 12 (4) of the NGOs Co-ordination Act No. 19 of 1990 and received funding towards achieving a political agenda which does not fall under the legal definition of charitable objectives as is provided for under the Act.

The Board believes that the funds were meant to fund campaigns for National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

The board further claims that it approached the chairperson of the foundation Ms. Jacqueline Achayo, to which Ms. Rosemary is the Trustee, over the matter and she said that she does not call the shots in terms of financial affairs and transactions.
